12 places to visit in Uganda : There are different places which can be visited around Uganda during safaris in the country and they include the following;
- Source of the Nile
The source of the Nile is among the destinations to visit during tours in Uganda and it is located in the eastern part of Uganda in Jinja.
It was discovered by John Speke and the Source of the Nile is the point where the River Nile starts flowing. Some of the activities which are done around the destination include boat rides, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, quad biking, bungee jumping, horse riding among other experiences.
- Sipi falls
The destination is located in eastern Uganda and the Sipi falls are a series of waterfalls which are located on Mount Elgon.
Sipi falls is made up of 3 waterfalls and tourists take part in steep hikes to the different falls through the coffee farms and local villages. The waterfalls vary in height and the waterfalls are about 85 meters high, 75 meters high and the longest is about 100 meters high.
Tourists can enjoy visiting the coffee farms on Mount Elgon where Arabica coffee is grown and also engage in other activities such as abseiling, community tours and also bird watching.
- Zziwa rhino sanctuary
The Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a conservation area which is located in Nakasongola district and is home to rhinos in Uganda.
Activities which can be carried out around the Zziwa rhino sanctuary include rhino trekking, canoe rides, Shoebill experience, guided nature walks during the day time and also in the night. Wildlife viewing can also be done around the sanctuary.
- Mabira forest
Mabira Forest is a tropical rainforest which is located in Buikwe district in the eastern part of Uganda. The forest covers about 300square kilometers and is located along the Kampala-Jinja highway.
Activities that tourists can take part in when visiting the Mabira forest include zip lining, bird watching, butterfly tours, guided forest walks and also Mangabey tracking.
- Kalangala island
The Kalangala Island is among the beautiful islands of Uganda and it is located in Lake Victoria, which is the largest lake in the country.
The island has white sand beaches and is also known as the Ssese island. The Kalangala island is a perfect location for relaxing and beach holidays.
- National parks of Uganda
Uganda has different national parks which can be visited during safaris in the country and they include Bwindi national park and Mgahinga national park where gorilla trekking is carried out, Kibale forest national park where chimpanzee trekking takes place, Rwenzori mountains national park where hiking is done during tours.
Tourists can also visit national parks in Uganda such as Kidepo valley national park, Queen Elizabeth national park, Lake Mburo national park and Murchison falls national park for wildlife safaris. Activities which can be done around these destinations include game drives in the morning and afternoon, guided nature walks, bird watching, boat safaris among other activities.
Other activities that tourists can engage in during visits to national parks in Uganda include chimpanzee habituation, gorilla habituation, golden monkey trekking, lion tracking among other experiences.
- Wildlife reserves
There are about 12 wildlife reserves found in different parts of Uganda and they include Karuma wildlife reserve, Pian Upe wildlife reserve, Ajai wildlife reserve, Bokora corridor wildlife reserve, Bugungu wildlife reserve, Aswa Lolim wildlife reserve, Toro-Semuliki wildlife reserve, Matheniko wildlife reserve, Kyambura game reserve, Kigezi wildlife reserve, Katonga wildlife reserve, Karuma wildlife reserve, Kabwoya wildlife reserve.
- Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi is located in south western Uganda in the Kigezi region and it is among the popular places to visit in the country.
The lake is surrounded by terraced hills and Lake Bunyonyi has about 29 islands which can be visited during tours and is the perfect destination to relax, enjoy boat rides on the lake and also interact with the locals and get to know more about their culture and traditions.
Bunyonyi is the deepest lake in Uganda and it is also a fresh water lake found between Kabale and Kisoro. Other activities done around the island include swimming, canoeing, community tours and visiting the different islands.
- Crater lakes
Crater lakes are also among the places to visit in Uganda and they are lakes which are formed as a result of volcanic activity.
The different crater lakes which are found around the country include Lake Nkuruba, Lake Nyinambuga, Katwe crater lake, Bunyaruguru craters, Lake Nyabikere, Kyaninga crater, Lake Kifuruka, Lake Kasenda among others.
The crater lakes can also be seen when visiting Fort Portal and also during tours around Queen Elizabeth national park in southwestern Uganda.
- Equator sign
When visiting Uganda, tourists can visit the equator at different points such as at Kayabwe and also around Queen Elizabeth national park. The equator also crosses on Lake Victoria and there is a point on the lake where tourists can take a boat and enjoy the equator experience.
- Kampala city
Kampala city is located in the central region of Uganda and is another place to visit during tours around the country.
A city tour around Kampala involves visiting different sites around the city and also experiencing the vibrant and bustling city life. The different places to visit include the Independence monument, Uganda museum, art galleries, Gadhafi mosque, Kabaka’s palace, Namirembe cathedral, Owino market, Nakasero market, Old taxi park among other places.
