  1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda in Kanungu District. The park is about 9-10 hours from Uganda’s capital Kampala and about 4-5 hours from Rwanda’s capital Kigali.
  2. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was previously a forest reserve gazetted in 1932 and in 1964 logging and hunting were banned in the forest. Then in 1991 the forest attained national park status, with mountain gorilla trekking starting a few years later.
  3. The park sits on an area of 331 square kilometers (128 sq mi) and has an altitude of 1,100-2,600 meters (3,600-8,500 ft) above sea level.
  4. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was established in 1991 as a National Park and in 1994 it had its first gorilla family trekked and in the same year it was pronounced a world heritage site.
  5. The Bwindi Forest, which is among the largest in the region and Africa, is home to over 1,000 tree and plant species.
  6. This forest is of course home to the famous mountain gorillas and 120 other mammal species; it’s home to 348 bird species, including 23 endemic bird species; 220 butterfly species; 27 frog and toad species; and some fish species in the small water bodies found in the lake.
  7. Speaking of the mountain gorillas, this park has the biggest number of gorillas in the whole world. As of 2023, the number of mountain gorillas in the park was estimated at slightly over 500 individuals.
  8. As of 2023, the park has 12 habituated mountain gorilla groups that are available for trekking.
  9. Part of Bwindi National Park is the Albertine Rift, which has the volcanic, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.

  10. The park experiences a tropical climate all year round with average temperatures of 10-20°C (50-68°F) and receives annual rainfall of 1,200-2,000 mm (47-79 in.).
  11. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is protected and managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Ramsar Site and an Important Bird Area (IBA) designation.
  12. Tourism activities done in this park include, but are not limited to mountain gorilla trekking, guided nature walks and forest walks, hiking trails, birdwatching, community tours, rock climbing and other things.
